May 24 - June 11 | william boyd fraser: FolkTokyo: white cedar wabi-sabi [North Gallery]

this is fraser’s first meditation on the subject of a FolkTokyo. this exploration of a fluid japanese worldview/shinto attempts to discover relationships within japanese cultural traditions and contemporary cultural idioms with one goal in mind: to inhabit an interconnectiveness. in a living universe, where the imperfect and rough aesthetics of japanese wabi-sabi is interpreted as allowing for the way trees grow and the bug track ‘engravings’ beneath the bark to be as important contributions to the work as fraser’s gestures and surface markings with a chainsaw. wood is meant to be touched. the free flowing grotesque yakisugi/burnt cedar stick drawings on paper are more automatic of a spirited meditation than descriptive of physical form. FolkToyko white cedar sculptures and charcoal drawings story tell a shinto imaginary of connection with natural forces and places of significant presence, transcendence and multiple faces.
